Caroline sat at the edge of Ava’s bed, stroking her hair.

“Fate was angry with the princess. Angry with her for making foolish plans.”

“What did the princess do?” Ava asked, wondering if the answer would ever change.

“Well, against her mother’s wishes, she planned a wedding to the gardener’s son, to the boy filled with stories. But it was never to be. The night before, one of the princess’s suitors who she had thwarted sent her a gift of pomegranate juice. The princess took one sip and fell to the ground. Poisoned.”

Silence stretched between them while Ava tried to process her thoughts. Tried to think of a different ending for the princess. One in which she could be happy. “I would never drink the poison.”

“Mmm.”

“And it’s so mean!”

“Yes, my love, but like I said, Fate was angry, and you should never anger Fate.”
